The type of wound depends on technique used. there many different techniques which have differences in term of pros and cons and each clinic may use different names as they reflect specific practices of individual surgeons. To simplify, they are based on 2 main techniques, which are…
1. FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)
The technique involves surgically removing a strip from the back side of the patient head then carefully extract healthy hair follicles to be transplanted on recipient area (target area). This method allows a higher among of hair grafts with minimal damage to the hair follicles. It is suitable for those who have moderate to advanced hair loss.
*The use of technique depends on surgeon’s analysis and patient’s individual factors.
2. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)
This technique is more popular due to It does not involve cutting the scalp therefore, results in small marks. The surgeon uses a small tool to extract individual hair follicle and implant them in the recipient area. This technique allows surgeon to perform BHT (Body Hair Transplant) technique which extract hair for other parts of the body in case, a lack of hair grafts.
Additionally, there is a highly popular technique called DHI (Direct Hair Implantation). It is an advanced version of FUE. The technique involves a tool called DHI Implanter which, allows a quicker, more precise procedure without surgery. This technique suits for individuals with mild to moderate hair loss.
The Characteristic of wounds from each technique

Regardless of technique, wounds will appear but there are differences between them
- FUT Technique: The technique will result in long linear scar due to a portion of skin is removed along with hair follicles but the scar is hidden under the hair which can be difficult to spot due to hair has grown longer, a few months after the procedure.
- FUE Technique: with this technique, the procedure will leave tiny puncture marks which, can hardly be visible and can be healed after the surgery, results in no scarring.
- DHI technique: This method is similar to FUE but can be healed faster and will leave even smaller marks with minimal swelling, depends on surgeon’s expertise.
Self-care after a hair transplant
The hair transplantation is a minor surgical procedure that allows you to recover at home. After the surgery, it will take about 1–2 weeks for the wounds to dry and form scabs and will naturally fall off over time. Here are some recommendations to prevent infection and any possible risks.
- First 48 Hours: Avoid making a contact with the transplanted region and direct sunlight or heat and wear a headband until 48 hours including while you are sleeping.
- First 2 Weeks: The same as first 2 days, avoid touching scratching or rubbing the wounds. It could cause bleeding or infection, potentially dislodging the transplanted follicles. Avoid direct sunlight and heat. Refrain from smoking and alcohol
- First 4 Weeks: Avoid activities that cause sweating. Refrain from heavy exercise, as it can increase pressure on the body and potentially displace the hair grafts.
